Managing money wisely can save you hassle and ensure you get the best value during your trip.
Currency Overview
- Each country has its own currency, but USD is widely accepted:
- Kenya: Kenyan Shilling (KES)
- Tanzania: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)
- South Africa: South African Rand (ZAR)
- Uganda: Ugandan Shilling (UGX)
- Morocco: Moroccan Dirham (MAD)
- Egypt: Egyptian Pound (EGP)
Cash vs Cards
Bring Both: - Cards for major purchases and withdrawals - Cash for tips, markets, and rural areas - USD widely accepted (2013 or newer, unmarked bills)
Credit & Debit Cards
Tips: - Notify your bank of travel dates - Visa and Mastercard most widely accepted - American Express less common - ATMs available in cities and tourist areas - Carry multiple cards as backup
ATM Tips
- Use ATMs inside banks when possible
- Be aware of withdrawal limits
- Check for skimming devices
- Have a backup if your card is retained
- Know your daily limits and fees
Exchanging Money
Best rates: - Banks and official bureaux de change - Avoid airport exchanges (worst rates) - Never exchange on the street - Keep exchange receipts
Tipping Guide
- Tipping is expected in tourism:
- Safari guides: $15-20 USD per person/day
- Lodge staff: $10-15 USD per person/day (shared among staff)
- Restaurants: 10-15% if service not included
- Porters: $1-2 per bag
- Drivers: $5-10 per day
Safety Tips
- Use a money belt or hidden pouch
- Don't flash large amounts of cash
